The show initial expression checkbox in the Task definition can be used to show the expression directly to the student as first input in the Algebra block mode interaction field. This way, you don’t have to declare the question input also in the question text editor. This is particularly useful when randomising your questions, or for questions that are typical algebra-only.

Note: this only works for interactions that are used in the Algebra block mode setting. Not for inline or extended inline.
Note: this checkbox is only available for Algebra interactions which contain exactly one step. As soon as you add another step, the checkbox is removed and this functionality is not available anymore.
Note: this checkbox only adds the expression to the interactive editor that is shown to the student, and does not affect the automated worked solution.
