It might be that you are looking for inline step-by-step support, as the block interaction mode for the algebra and/or math entry interaction is not suitable for your question type but you do want to support steps explicitly.
In the default inline interaction mode of these interaction types, steps are supported, but are not visible by default. Therefore, we have added an inline extended mode. This setting only effects interactions that are inserted as inline in the question text-editor and that are either of type algebra and/or math entry.
In the interaction settings, check the box after Allow extended inline editor.
Author your question as usual and insert the interaction as inline interaction in the question:
